But it has since been found to have counterfeit versions of the drug, which was discovered to be tainted with lead and other contaminants.
"The counterfeit version of the Viagra was found to have the very same chemical composition as the genuine Viagra," said John G. Smith, Jr., who leads the group's research and production. "The real Viagra was not found to be counterfeit."
The counterfeit Viagra has since been found to be tainted with lead and other contaminants, and the counterfeit drug has been sold for up to $10 for a pack of four.
Merck said it was aware of the fake drug but declined to comment on the case.

In August of this year, the Food and Drug Administration gave an interim warning to Merck to warn about the fake drug.
Smith says he and other officials from the FDA are working with their counterparts in other countries to find a better solution.
